In some cases, data itself has become more valuable than the actual products a company sells - becoming its own ‘economy’ that can be sold, traded or commodified. It’s understandable then, more than ever, large organisations are eager to ensure they are capturing data in the right way and using it to its full potential.    

Whilst the opportunity is clear, realising the full potential of your data is a major challenge for most organisations.

Both the volume and complexity of the data sets that we are dealing with are growing at an exponential rate. While many organisations are looking at how they manage this problem, we are seeing a growing number looking at it as a strategic opportunity.

For many Data Professionals, 2018 brings to the table a directive to unlock the potential of organisational data and develop a platform capable of driving ‘data-led’ decision making. The first part of the equation is usually the easiest part; whether traditional data warehouses, data lakes or hybrid models, ingesting and storing data is quite achievable. But the risk lies in applying the correct management and ongoing governance to ensure the data maintains its integrity, is trusted by the business, and is able to provide the most valuable output.

There is no point in collecting data and storing it if it is impossible to extract or use in a relevant manner. Simply storing large volumes of data without an effective governance framework, kicks the issue down the line, extrapolates problems and risks creating a vast data swamp.
